Em 12 de agosto, 1553 o Papa Júlio III, assinou um decreto proibindo o Talmud em Roma, proibindo qualquer coisa semelhante ao Talmud, (tudo que fosse escrito em letras hebraicas). Jean DuTillet, Bispo de Brieu, França, visitava Roma na época. DuTillet foi surpreendido ao tomar conhecimento de um manuscrito hebraico de Mateus entre os outros manuscritos hebraicos. DuTillet adquiriu o manuscrito e retornou à França, depositando-o na Biblioteca Nacional, Paris. Ele permanece lá até hoje como ms hebreu. No. 132. Conhecida e respeitada pelos pais da igreja, a versão DuTillet hebraico de Mateus, também Hugh Schonfield declarou sua opinião de que este texto hebraico é a base do nosso texto grego atual, bem como dos antigos evangelhos aos hebreus, dos Nazarenos e Ebionitas.

On August 12, 1553 Pope Julius III signed a decree banning the Talmud in Rome, forbidding any thing similar to the Talmud, (everything that was written in Hebrew letters). Jean DuTillet, Bishop of Brieu, France, visited Rome at the time. DuTillet was surprised when he learned of a Hebrew manuscript of Matthew among the other Hebrew manuscripts. DuTillet acquired the manuscript and returned to France, depositing it in the National Library, Paris. It remains there today as Hebrew ms. No. 132. Kwow and respected by the church fathers, the DuTillet Hebrew version of Matthew, also Hugh Schonfield stated his opinion that the Hebrew text is the basis of our present Greek text, as well as the old Gospels to the Hebrews, of theNazarenes and Ebionites.

O Evangelho segundo os Hebreus é um evangelho perdido, preservado apenas em fragmentos dos escritos dos Pais da Igreja.
Houve uma forte tradição na Igreja primitiva, atestada por Pápias, Ireneu, Orígenes, Eusébio, Epifânio e Jerónimo, que afirmavam que Mateus tinha escrito o Evangelho na língua hebraica. Ireneu, Epifânio e Jerónimo relacionaram o Evangelho dos Hebreus com o evangelho de Mateus em hebraico.
Orígenes escreveu:
"O primeiro a ser escrito foi aquele segundo o colector de impostos que posteriormente tornou-se apóstolo de Jesus. Mateus, publicou-o para os crentes oriundos do judaísmo, tendo ele sido composto em caracteres hebraicos. Chamam-lhe o Evangelho dos Hebreus, pois na verdade, Mateus foi o único que no Novo Pacto expôs e declarou o evangelho em hebraico, utilizando o alfabeto hebraico".
Eusébio também faz referência ao texto, explicando que os Apóstolos
"escreveram forçados pela necessidade. Mateus, de fato, pregou primeiro aos hebreus. Como devia também partir para anunciar as palavras a outros, deixou por escrito na língua pátria o evangelho, suprindo a falta de sua presença por meio dos escritos junto daqueles dos quais se apartava”.
Eusébio também acreditava que o Evangelho foi escrito em hebraico como fez Nicephorus.
Ireneu dá-nos uma visão mais ampla da data e das circunstâncias em que o Evangelho de Mateus foi escrito, explicando que
“Mateus, introduziu um evangelho escrito entre os judeus ao estilo deles, quando Pedro e Paulo estavam pregando o Evangelho em Roma e fundando a igreja nessa localidade”. Ireneu acreditava que Mateus tinha publicado o Evangelho dos Hebreus na sua própria língua, enquanto Pedro e Paulo estavam pregando em Roma, estabelecendo assim as bases da Igreja. Hegesippus afirmou que foi escrito em siríaco.
Jerónimo escreveu que Mateus, o cobrador de impostos e, posteriormente, um apóstolo, compôs seu evangelho perto de Jerusalém para os cristãos hebreus. Em seguida, esse evangelho foi traduzido para o grego, mas a cópia grega foi perdida. O original hebraico foi preservado na Biblioteca de Cesareia, que Pânfilo de Cesareia diligentemente reunia. Jerónimo entrou em mais detalhes, confirmando que o Evangelho dos Hebreus foi escrito em hebraico. Ele explicou que o Evangelho dos Hebreus foi escrito no idioma caldeu e sírio, mas em estilo hebraico. Esse Evangelho havia sido traduzido para o grego, mas essa tradução tinha sido perdida. Assim, ele traduziu para o latim e grego. O original hebraico foi preservado na biblioteca de Cesaréia, que Pânfilo recolheu.
Epifânio escreveu que os ebionitas utilizavam apenas o Evangelho dos Hebreus, onde foi utilizado o alfabeto hebraico.
Os Nazarenos transcreveram uma cópia para Jerónimo, que ele usou em seu trabalho. Jerónimo ainda acrescenta que o evangelho de Mateus foi denominado o Evangelho dos Hebreus ou às vezes o Evangelho dos Apóstolos, e foi usado pelas comunidade dos Nazarenos. Este Evangelho dos hebreus é muito diferente do Evangelho de Mateus que se encontra na Bíblia.
Os estudiosos concordam porém, que há uma ligação entre o Evangelho dos Hebreus e O Evangelho de Mateus. Ele foi escrito em aramaico com caracteres hebraicos. Sua autoria foi atribuída a São Mateus.
Com efeito, enquanto o Evangelho dos Hebreus estava sendo distribuído e lido, os Pais da Igreja se referiam a ele sempre com respeito, muitas vezes com reverência. Eles aceitaram esse evangelho como sendo um trabalho de Mateus.
Hoje quase todos os estudiosos concordam que o Evangelho dos Hebreus existiu em hebraico, grego e latim. Edwards, Nicholson, Hilgenfeld, Handmann e outros acreditam que ele foi escrito originalmente em hebraico e foi destinado para os leitores de hebraico.

O Evangelho de Mateus foi dirigido primariamente aos judeus e portanto foi escrito em hebraico. A evidência de que Mateus escreveu este Evangelho originalmente em hebraico remonta a Pápias de Hierápolis, do segundo século EC.

The Gospel according to the Hebrews is a lost gospel preserved only in fragments of the writings of the Church Fathers.
There was a strong tradition in the early Church, attested by Papias, Irenaeus, Origen, Eusebius, Epiphanius and Jerome, who said that Matthew 's Gospel was written in Hebrew. Irenaeus, Epiphanius and Jerome associated the Gospel of the Hebrews with the gospel of Matthew in Hebrew.
Origen wrote:
" The First to be written was that according to the tax collector who later became an apostle of Jesus Matthew published it for believers coming from Judaism, he having been composed in Hebrew characters They call it the gospel of the Hebrews , for in truth, Matthew was the only one in the New Covenant expounded and declared the Gospel in Hebrew , using the Hebrew alphabet."
Eusebius also makes reference to the text, explaining that the Apostles
"wrote forced by necessity. Matthew, in fact, first preached to the Hebrews. How was too low to advertise other word, left written in the gospel homeland language, supplying the missing their presence through the writings for those whom not depart."
Eusebius also believed that the Gospel was written in Hebrew as did Nicephorus.
Irenaeus gives us a broader view of the date and circumstances in which the Gospel of Matthew was written, explaining that
"Matthew, introduced a written Gospel among the Jews to their style when Peter and Paul were preaching the Gospel in Rome and founding the church in that locality."
Irenaeus believed that Matthew had published the Gospel of the Hebrews in their own language, while Peter and Paul were preaching at Rome and laying the foundations of the Church. Hegesippus said was written in Syriac.
Jerome wrote that Matthew, the tax collector and later an Apostle, composed his gospel near Jerusalem for Hebrew Christians. Then this gospel was translated into Greek, but the Greek copy was lost. The original Hebrew was preserved in the library of Caesarea, which Pamphilus diligently gathered. Jerome went into more detail , confirming that the Gospel of the Hebrews was written in Hebrew. He explained that the Gospel of the Hebrews was written in Chaldean and Syriac language but in Hebrew style. This Gospel had been translated into Greek, but the translation was lost. So he translated into Latin and Greek. The original Hebrew was preserved in the library of Caesarea, which Pamphilus gathered .
Epiphanius wrote that the Ebionites used only the Gospel of the Hebrews, where the Hebrew alphabet was used.
The Nazarenes transcribed a copy for Jerome which he used in his work. Jerome adds that Matthew's Gospel was called the Gospel of the Hebrews or sometimes the Gospel of the Apostles, and was used by the community of the Nazarenes. This Gospel of the Hebrews is very different from the Gospel of Matthew found in the Bible.
Scholars agree however that there is a connection between the Gospel of the Hebrews and the Gospel of Matthew. It was written in Aramaic with Hebrew characters. Its authorship was attributed to St. Matthew.
Indeed, while the Gospel of the Hebrews was being distributed and read, the Fathers referred to him always with respect, often with reverence. They accepted this gospel as a work of Matthew.
Today almost all scholars agree that the Gospel of the Hebrews existed in Hebrew, Greek and Latin. Edwards, Nicholson, Hilgenfeld, Handmann and others believe it was originally written in Hebrew and was intended for readers of Hebrew.
